Type Specimens

I was assigned a Shakespeare quote and a photograph of diamond like gems, from there I used a type design website that allowed me to design a typeface that followed set rules and shapes. After finalizing my font, named "Ruff", I designed 2 type specimen posters to showcase the font.

"This I Believe" Zine

This zine came from the popular public radio segment "This I Believe". This I Believe, Inc. publishes a weekly podcast of selections from the award-winning public radio series. Each week a different person reads an essay they have written about their most deeply held beliefs. Since its debut in 2005, the This I Believe series has featured essays by Muhammad Ali, Bill Gates, Gloria Steinem, Tony Hawk, Yo-Yo Ma, and many everyday citizens.

For this project I had to write my own "This I Believe" statement, and then create my own woodblock type face and pattern to put together in a zine in which my essay could be read, both literally and visually.

For the type, I wanted it to have a western feel, since the subject matter was about a country song. I gave the letters embellishments that you would see on cowboy boots, embroidered button ups, and other classic southwestern fashion. I didn't like the curvy bumps and curls on the serifs of traditional western fonts, I wanted it to look modern so I kept the aspects I liked, the love handles, and trimmed the "fat", making this a sans serif font. Each letter was individually vectored by hand in illustrator after I sketched out a few sample letters to reference. This font is aptly named "Bolo Tie"
